Overviews of the Receipts Registers
The data extracted from the folio pages of the daily receipt registers are at the heart of the Comédie-Française Registers Project. However, the registers, and the data they contain, are far from homogeneous. We urge scholars interpreting the data to study the following four overviews of the receipt registers carefully. In them, Agathe Sanjuan, the Archivist of the Comédie-Française, carefully explains the inconsistencies and the gaps in the data with which users should be familiar. Some of the topics covered in these four overviews include changing price schemes over the 113 seasons in the database and the difficulties of determining nightly attendance figures.
These pages should also be read in tandem with the descriptions of the four venues in which the troupe played from 1680-1793, under the rubric "Theater Venues."
